As you have held a full car licence for over 30 years you are automatically permitted to drive a 7.5 tonne vehicle. Tachographs are a legal requirement within the E.U for all goods vehicles of 3.5 tonnes and above. If you are unsure about using said tachographs contact your local lgv/pcv training school - or friendly truck driver - we do exist!! for a short introduction. If you intend to drive a vehicle on '07' plate you WILL need a digital tachograph card from DVLA, cost -£38 and lasts for 5 years - get form from local licencing post office, but you will NOT require a medical as in lgv's. If you are intending to drive for your current employer, they may be willing to bear the cost of the card to keep you 'sweet'. There are rumours that all goods vehicles over 1 tonne gvw could be fitted with tacho's in the near future

i`m sure this link will give you all the info that you require.

Your fork truck licence will not cover a 7.5 tonne van unless its on private property...but you dont need a licence anyway you only need permission

If you passed your car test (Category B) before January 1st 1997, as you did, you are entitled to drive vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes gross weight.

Anyone who passed their car test after that date, needs to take a Category C or C1 test (the old H.G.V. Class 2) to drive anything over 3.5 tonnes gross weight.
