If something weird crashed somewhere and it was a UFO, why would the government want to cover it up and say it was a weather balloon or something? Like the Roswell incident?

Numerous answers on numerous levels; 1) UFOs need NO gas, oil, substandard highways, etc. to travel; could we AFFORD the disclosure? 2) IF some are militarily hostile we'd need a successful defense before they're even acknowledged, and do we even know among the estimated multi-races out there observing us, WHO's friendly and who's not? 3) Are they "tapping" us for body parts, earth minerals, stem cells, etc. such that disclosure would set off an international panic?4) Do we have an "agreement" to keep them a secret in return for advanced technology?5) Have our geniuses in gov't. figured out the most painless way HOW to disclose the truth after 60 or more years of lying, disinformation, deflection and, yes, maybe even murder?6) Would the (majority of) the "bluenose" Scientific Community EVER accept that they've been hopelessly wrong about this phenomena?7) Do we"announce", then fight to the death against enemies, terrorists, etc. who'd kill to steal the technology and use it against us? 8) (Maybe the biggest) COULD ORGANIZED RELIGION STAND THE SHOCK? ....The result; six decades of "Denial and Ridicule" as so stated by former CIA Director Stansfield Turner in 1978, I believe , in a "deliberate" slip from Pres. Jimmy Carter, one of two Presidents who as ex-Governors (also Reagan) had a serious UFO sighting. There's more, but that's enough.

Mainly for the reason that knowledge is King. Any information or technology that was of value is a national defense issue and would therefore be deemed top secret. The call is out though this year from the EU to all governments to give up any information from "UFOs" that might be of use to save the environment.

There are many issues to this question and there is no easy answer. But ask yourself this: Is the world really ready for full disclosure? All other arguments aside, such as reverse engineering and other arguments, such a disclosure that aliens are real and the the government knows about it would challenge mankind's thinking to the core. I tend to think that such disclosure is already being started through media leaks, etc. to prepare people for the eventual day when full disclosure is given.

But I am more inclined to believe that there are alien beings living among us who have not chosen to reveal themselves to us because we are too primitive as a species - too warlike. And if the government is aware of that as well, then full disclosure would be catastrophic. Although I am of the personal opinion that an alien species has visited Earth and that the government is fully aware of it. Of course, as a student of the sciences asked about that very question, I would answer, "Do you want my personal or my professional opinion?"

First of all, all a UFO is, is a flying object that hasn't been identified... BUT that doesn't mean the government doesn't know what it is. The government has tons of secret flying craft that they want to keep secret from the public. They keep them secret because they don't want people to freak out, and they don't want other governments to get ideas on how to make the same thing.

Now, if something crashed that wasn't from out government, they would want to keep it secret for national security, and to keep people calm. If people knew something got into our country without being noticed for so long, then how could anyone feel safe?

Here's why. Victor Marchetti, former Executive Assistant to the Deputy Director and Special Assistant to the Executive Director of the CIA had stated in 1979 this following statement:

"We have, indeed, been contacted---perhaps even visited---by extraterrestrial beings, and the U.S. government, in collusion with the other national powers of the earth, is determined to keep this information from the general public. The purpose of the international conspiracy is to maintain a workable, stability among nations of the world and for them, in turn, to retain institutional control over their respective populations. Thus, for these governments to admit that there are beings from outer space...with mentalities and technological capabilities obviously far superior to ours, could, once fully perceived by the average person, erode the foundations of the earth's traditional power structure. Political and legal systems, religions, economic and social institutions could all soon become meaningless in the mind of the public. The national oligarchical establishments, even civilization as we now know it, could collapse into anarchy. Such extreme conclusions are not necessarily valid, but they probably accurately reflect the fears of the "ruling classes" of the major nations, whose leaders (particularly those in the intelligence business) have always advocated excessive governmental secrecy as being necessary to preserve "national security."
----Page 365., from Timothy Good's book --Above Top Secret.

I ask. By not disclosing the extraterrestrial equation, are we better off? In my opinion, no! Are we not still killing ourselves and destroying our enviornment for the sake of the elite's self-aggrandizement so that they may maintain control over us? Whose National Security State are we protecting? Are we protecting the elite's position, or are we nothing but cannon fodder until such time that their (elites) positions can be secured under a new paradigm? Who is paying the price? I'll guarantee it is not the elites!

I think the movies "Contact" and "Independence day" portray very plausible scenarios if it was suddenly revealed that there were extraterrestrial intelligences near or in contact with us. Mass hysteria could ensue. But like in those movies it would be virtually impossible for just one government to cover it all up. If aliens came here would they just zig around in the night sky and crash in the US of all places? Earth is a really big place. Why would the US be the most interesting place on it? It might be for illegal aliens but not the extraterrestrial kind... If aliens were to come here we would all know about it and the government that tries to the deny it then would look very very stupid.

It has to do with religion. The man who is decyphering the inscriptions on the Roswell "weather balloon" said if people would know the creation of the universe religion would cease to exist. That's a lot of money and keeping people in line by the use of religion. He said the God bit is a mere myth. Remember the old saying religion is the opium of the people-well the supply would dry up...so keep everyone in the dark.

I may be naive, but perhaps there is no cover up. I have yet to see a photo of a UFO that is not fuzzy, or of an alien that does not look like it is made of silicone.
What is intriguing is that the photos and sightings seem to have dried up, now that nearly everyone has hi-res, auto-focus digital cameras, many on their phones. You would have thought that the pictures would become more prevalent, and clearer.
Instead, we keep getting Roswell thrown at us. Is there nothing more recent?

In order not to scare you and yours. I don't think you would know where to run let alone have any possibility of getting away. Governments tend to think we have wings and can fly away. If the visitors ever met you they would not know who you are let alone know who your governing body is..that is to say..who is the FBI, the CIA, or some such regularity body? Aliens don't think like humans so don't expect them to understand your level of intelligence and by calling Mom if they ever stop you. They don't know you - they don't know anything and besides what we do is nothing out of this world - excuse the pun..but it is so. We damn ourselves thinking building support centres for possible visitors but then get stumped by complete innocence. Humans? Duh!?
