Consider this for a start: it was the Greeks who came up with the concept of citizens actively participating in government, pioneered by the Athenians, who coined the term "democracy." This was a revolutionary idea for its time, because most of their neighboring city-states were monarchies--and these monarchies weren't exactly constitutional. True, the kings usually ad advisors, but nothing really compelled them to take the advice.

It is also Greek ideals of human beauty that influence us even today--the statues of the time (even in their somewhat ruined state, in some cases) show ideal figures, beautifully proportioned--contrast these with some of the more "realistic" carvings of so-called "Venus figures," female forms with sagging breasts and bellies.

Rhetoric, the art of speaking well, was raised to an art form by the Greeks (although it was held in high esteem by most civilizations, including those of the Native Americans), and just the whole idea of of the nobility of humankind is rooted in this culture.

We are definitely indebted to them for a lot of our "modern" ideas--and ideals.

The ancient Greece has influenced western civilization. It laid a foundation that that has supported nearly 3000 years of European history. Philosophers like Aristotle and Socrates, Olympian gods, the beginnings of democracy and great conquering armies can be attributed to the Ancient Greeks. This strong and charismatic people strategically harnessed the materials and people around them to create the most advanced technological feats the world had ever seen. From The Tunnel of Samos: a mile-long aqueduct dug through a large mountain of solid limestone, to Agamemnon's Tomb, to The Parthenon, we will examine the architecture and infrastructure engineered by the Greek Empire. This event in their history differentiates them from the other.
