The Elitist lacks the nitrocellulose finishes of their Gibson counterparts. The Epiphone Elitist Les Paul Standard goes for $1149 on Musician's Friend website. The Epiphone Elitist Les Paul Custom goes for $1099 on the same website.

The Epiphone Les Paul Custom is about half the cost of the Elitist, $599, but reviews show that while the sound is good it doesn't have the quality of a real Gibson and starts falling apart quickly with use.

It sounds to me as though you would be smart to spend the money and buy the Elitist.

The custom has:Mahogany body, Alder top, Rosewood fretboard, and gold hardware. 2 humbuckers and is around $600.
The Elitist has: Bookmatched Maple top,Bookmatched African Mahogany back, Gold hardware including Grover tuners, and 2 higher quality humbuckers. It's basically a higher quality guitar. Retails for about $1200.
There will be subtle differences intone and sound due to the different pick-ups and woods. But the main difference is just a quality thing.
