He was great, but he wasn't even the best in his Brazil team. But he got all the attention. And he was a wonderful person. Many who call him the best didn't even saw him play. Or many of the other great players.

I think you're wrong ... but we all have our own opinions and that's what makes life interesting.
I've read a lot of football articles and books and seen a lot of old footage from before my time. I'm only 31. I've read Pele's biography and one thing I picked up on was that he was full of himself and quite far up his own a**e. But, he had every reason to be!! This guy's record is nothing short of breath-taking and his assists (as well as goals) cannot be matched by anyone, of anytime.
He didn't always play against the best teams but often Santos, his club, would play 4 times a week to generate money to keep in business. They once toured Europe and played 13 games in 17 days!! So you can imagine that they wouldn't have always been in top shape.
On what i've read there are more ex footballers who say that the best player they ever saw or played against was Pele as opposed to Maradona, Best, Cruyff, Di Stefano etc..

Pele played in a team of greats they won the world cup 3 times and he was paramount in thier success , Maradona was a great player as was Best but Pele is still untouched in my opinion .What did Best win he may have the greatest but he never had the chance to cement that.

He is. Him and Maradona are up there together. Pele for Brazil and Maradona for Argentina. George Best are not in the same league as those 2. They are the greatest. Zidane is sought of up there.

No. Certainly not. He played at a time when the love of the game was the prime motivation. Won three world cups (should have been four), scored over a thousand goals and remains a worthy ambassador for the game. So the skills, character and fame are obviously there. What he lacked and sadly what matters today is money. Ruined several promising stars that should have exceeded his achievements. Tons of it that has led many drugs, wrong career decisions, lure of Hollywood, you name it.

I have to disagree. A great legend is someone who is ahead of their time, and that is what Pele was. He was truly one of a kind. Is he better then Maradona? To me they're almost equal, but I think he is better then Best.

If Pele was playing in the Brasilian league now scoring like he does people wouldnt mention him. Does anyone know the top scorer of their league last season? He should have come to Europe like Maradonna did and prove himself against the best week in week out. Maradonna won things everywhere with rubbish teams like Napolli.

Good question... i would like to think Pele was the greatest, especially after he scored that overhead kick goal in the film 'Escape To Victory'. His value must have gone up £4 million after that goal.

Pele is definitely #1 cus he was the first of his kind. i mean if you look at old videos you don't find ANYBODY that is as good as him before him. i mean Best, Cruyff, Maradona, Zidane they all came after Pele. and if you look at all his goals and assists it is unmatched by anybody. as for maradona he was pretty good but not the best. in my opinion it goes 1. Pele 2. Best 3. Zidane

How can I put this, so, as not to cause any offence?
You are 1000 per cent WRONG!
There is NO DOUBT, that the world has, indeed, produced some wonderful soccer players, - CRUYFF, MARADONA, CHARLTON, BEST, MATTHEWS, and, (dare I say it), even ROONEY, - but, there is NO DOUBT, that the great Edson Arantes do Nasciemento, - to give "PELE", his "PROPER" name, - WAS, indeed, the finest player to pull on a pair of boots!

You should look at them play not their statistics. I've never seen anything close to Pele. Maradonna was nowhere near the best. Zidane is right up there. George Best, was a myth not a legend.
