Begin your adventure in the fabric shop at the pattern counter. Begin by buying a pattern in the style you want to make. If this is your first time making a dress, then don't even think of trying to make one without a pattern. Choose your pattern size by measuring your bust, waist, and hips and pick your size that's closest to your measurements. Don't be surprised when you pattern size is larger than the size you buy in stores, the size scales are not related in any way. When choosing a pattern try to pick one that is rated easy or average, save the boned, structured, strapless styles for when you have more dressmaking experience. Purchase fabrics based on the pattern's recommended fabrics and purchase whatever notions; such as thread zippers, linings -that are listed on the pattern envelope. Inside the envelope is an instruction sheet. Follow the instructions carefully. The sheet will tell how to compare your body measurements to the patterns, where to make adjustments if needed, how to lay out the pattern on the fabric, how to cut and how to assemble the dress. Don't try to make the dress without following the instructions sheet. read the instructions twice before sewing and then follow each step in order and don't skip any steps.

You should get satisfactory results from any commercial pattern, but for evening I like vogue patterns and Simplicity patterns. Vogue has several evening dresses that are classified as easy and a couple that are very easy. Simplicity has many different style that are suitable for a first time dressmaker. Don't make anything too complex, stick with a simple style in a spectacular fabric and use a bit of beaded or rhinestone trim to add sparkle, like they do on dresses available in the stores..

The best tip one can give a seamstress making a hot dress would be to measure twice, cut once!

And use strong yet very soft thread. A lot of ready-to-wear formal dressmakers use fishing line as thread and that pokes and chafes so badly.
