My boyfriend lives way back in the country and has a beautiful yard with a swing that I can lay and read in.

Problem is most of the time there are racoons and squirls, and rabbits and possums that run around his yard. I think there is even a gofer but I have only seen evidence of him..

How do I keep them out of yard so I can sit in it and some what enjoy the day or afternoon. ??

I live on a ranch. I encourage the wildlife to come around the house. I have a greenhouse in the back and I play a radio all the time and I still have the animals coming up to the fence for their evening snacks. I believe as long as you leave well enough a lone the animals will stay their distance from you. Have you ever just sat and watched the animals? Its a great stress reliever and educational. You would be surprised what you can learn from the "critters". So go out read your book and swing your heart content. ENJOY!!!!

Raccoons and 'possums mostly come out at night so I shouldn't think they are a problem. Same with rabbits. And you haven't seen the gopher, so that leaves only squirrels. How do they interfere with your swinging and reading? Do the animals jump up on the swing or try to read over your shoulder?

Animals are part of the charm of the country, learn to live with them.

"City Girl"- huh? Didn't you learn anything watching Green Acres? If you don't bother them, they won't bother you! In fact, I'll bet you you couldn't sit still long enough or be quiet enough, to even see one. Some young ladies would love to see a little "wild life"as opposed to "The Simple Life". If you're really that freaked out by Mother Nature and need a little equalizer, get your boyfriend to teach you how to shoot. I'm sure he has 22 lying around and just one shot will clear the woods of critters for miles. This works best if your trying to put some meat on the table (it's called hunting). Try to enjoy yourself, you're in an enviable position! RScott

You're kidding, right? You don't enjoy seeing those little critters run around? I mean, if you said there were skunks or large carnivorous animals running around I could understand your concern.
I suggest that you learn to enjoy the outdoors with the animals that live there, that is, after all, why people live in the country as opposed to the city: they prefer green to asphalt.

In the Country, your in "their" territory!

Try getting a dog, (if you can stand the constant yapping that is going to be associated with them going after critters...going to intrude on your reading though, unless your a very intense person who can concentrate enough to block it out).

No "wild animal" is going to bother you, unless they come up to you...(THEN beware, because if a wild animal comes up to you like a "tame one", chances are that it has rabies!), and they will avoid you at all cost.

Now, if you "feed" the animals, they will tend to get "used" to humans, (I have seen several people hand feed squirrels and other annimals, in public parks, they have grown used to certain people), and that will be an annoyance unto itself all together.

Keep your distance, and they will also keep thier distance.

Put bird feeders out for the squirrels in another part of the yard, and the squirrels and other animals will go after them! Also, put out suet for birds around the trees and the squirrels, racoons and other things will also go after that, and leave you entirely alone.

I wish you well...

Jesse

Ahhhhh, the beauty of nature.
I live in a rural area as well. I LOVE IT!
I grew up in the city where all the pollution is. It makes me appreciate my new surroundings that much more.
As for the critters, I use to burn our garbage,(in a pit) yet not everything burned. One morning when leaving for work, I noticed a skunk in the pit. That's when I stopped burning it & hauled it off.
With that said, make sure your boyfriend isn't dumping anything like cooking grease or anything like that.

Why would you want to keep them out of the yard? They are part of the beauty of nature. Are they really making that much noise to keep you from reading? Sure wouldn't want you living around me...I have a deer feeder, bird feeders, flowers that attact birds and humming birds all sorts of wild life around my home. I love to watch them all.

Why do you need to keep them out of the yard? Unless your boyfriend has been feeding them and they've gotten used to "humans = food" they should leave you alone.
