Within the black community, there are some who prefer light skin because they have been conditioned to believe it is more attractive than dark skin. During slavery, those blacks who worked in the fields were typically dark skinned. There was another group that did not work in the fields. They were the offspring or mistress/concubines of the white slave owner. They worked in the house of the slave owner and they got more privileges than their dark skinned counterparts in the fields. It's easy to see that it was better to be the biracial offspring and get more liberties and work inside the house instead of sweating in the fields. In addition, people are influenced by what they see in the media. The blonde, blue eyed girls are always shown as being more appealing than others. If people constantly see a particular type depicted as the desirable standard, it will influence their thinking.

This is an age old question among many races. Let me say that I am fine with the skin I have because as with all my features it speaks to my family and racial history. Both of which I am very proud of.

I am very fair skinned and use a tanning bed to have tan skin. I realize this is unhealthy so obviously, I wish I had naturally tan colored skin.

Lighter.
But since I'm white, I guess there may be recipes which makes the skin paler.
(For instance, I've heard that peaches and cream have that effect... And that's where the term "peaches and cream complexion' derives...)
