Cheapest wont work...You need to know what zone in the country you are in then research what grass and plants grow best in your area with little watering and maintenance...If you don;t know go to your local Lowes Garden Center or Home Depot garden Center and they will help you with all these questions....When we lived up north I put down Rye grass in the fall and mowed it when the snow melted then reseeded it with Kentucky blue grass in the Spring ...It came up beautifully and was gorgeous!!! Now that we live Deep in the Heart of Texas in the South we have Bermuda Grass which is gorgeous and like a carpet under your feet when you walk on it...We love it... Enjoy your researching this question.....

I cant even tell you what your in for if you go out and buy the cheapest seed out there. As someone mentioned before, it will be filled with weeds, grassy weeds and crap. You will probably get very little germination, and you will nto be happy. Trust me when i tell you, it will worth it to spend alittle extra on a higher quality grass seed. Your lawn will most likely be covered in tall fescue, which if that is what your going for great, but i know most people dont like clumps of taller thicker grass in there nice bluegrass lawn. So know what time of grass is sutible for your climate and go from there.

Cheap is a relevent term. If you buy cheap, much of it may not grow. Many bags of seed have lots of different grasses that will not grow in your area. The cheaper the seed, the more annual rye seed. It only grows for one year. It is a filler for better seed to start growing.

As previously stated, depends where you are. Zone 4,5,6 I'd say annual ryegrass, about $.75- $1.10 lb based on 50lbs.
