Night.

Get slug pellets or set beer traps. The pesky pests ate all mine last year. This year I preempted the slugs, but the beans look dodgy anyway. Ho Hum.

At night. Keep the bed clear of weeds and rubbish and they won't have anywhere to hide during the day. If the slugs eat your beans, you could always eat the slugs.

Slugs come in the cool moisture of the night. You can pick them off ( YUK!), place a ring of wood ash around the plant (careful not to touch the stem) or place saucers of beer near the plants. This draws them away from the plant and they drown in the beer. It's a chemical-free way to reduce the population.

Day/Night they dont mind. Use a slug repellent or put some sharp stones around the bottom if you want to be more organic. They also come out more when its raining.

Try planting marrigolds (plants not the gloves!!) around the beans, slugs will be more interested in eating them than they will your beans!

More likely at night - particularly after rain.

Get the slug pellets down, or go out late at night and salt them - they don't like that!!

Probably at night, especially after it's been raining too. Why don't you use some slug repellent? Works a treat! :P
