I would like to do some studies of mice. I have read an article on scientists who did studies on laughter of animals. It really inspired me to conduct some sort of experiement of my own. I do not want to hurt the mouse in any way. What could I do?

You could do experiments on:
Nutrition: Give different types of synthetic food and find out which type leads to gain of weight.
Photoperiod: Subject them to different periods of light and dark and see whether it has any effect on the gain/loss of weight.
Behavior: Play different types of music and see whether they have effects on appetite of the animal.

What kind of cruel selfish idiot are you to even think of experimenting on mice? Don't you realise that there are laws covering animal experimentation to prevent cruelty to them? Humane societies monitor these things very closely. You have to follow very strict guidelines, including that there has to be absolutely no other way to prove your thesis. Experiments on animals are only used as the last possible method of scientific discovery.
You are such an amateur! If you want to be inspired, read about global warming and what you can do to save the planet so that there will still be animals around for your children.

Emil says mice are particularly stress sensitive and then he claims that none of these experiments can hurt them??? WTF? They are especially sensitive to stress so the stress of the experiment hurts them. Der!
I can't believe that there are still ignoramuses like you guys out there. Grow a brain and after that a heart for your fellow earth creatures. Moron!

You could let them go and see if any of them come back to you.

There is no way you can do an experiment on an animal and not hurt it in some way. Just the stress of it is enough. Animals do not understand what is happening to them.

There are a gazillion other ways to do some fun, innovative or beneficial scientific research. Don't use innocent animals for your personal glory quest.

1. Try the maize (that entangled path they have to discover in order to get food and water). You will see how intelligent mice are.

2. Try to see if mice can learn their names; rats can!

And, of course, none of these experiments could ever hurt those cute little creatures if you handle them properly - in order to avoid distressing them. (mice are particularly stress-sensitive)
