You will not be able to connect to the wired lan without him knowing, you would have to be physically plugged into it. If he has a wireless lan, all you need is a wireless adapter and hope its not encrypted. If its open wireless, just connect to it. But as stated above, its just wrong to do that!

IF it is a wireless LAN and he does not have security set up on it, nothing special as far as software is needed, just a wireless adapter. Be advised if he wants, he can turn you in. It is a Federal Offence to use a connection without permission.

Your wireless adapter can auto sense the available LAN, and also see if it's encrypted, etc.

However, might I suggest the legal route? Simply discuss this with them, and maybe split the bill. This might make them happy as well.

As effectively this is morally questionable I don't think anyone should assist you. Why are you to mean to pay for your own internet connection or do you want to spy on your neighbour, or worse still steal from him.

I hope this helps you consider your conscience.

why don't you just go and ask them? even though u can secretly connect to their LAN/WLAN but they can also see your IP, computer name and MAC address in the router logs! They can block you anytime they want.
