Oracle, as you know, us British know the value of humour the art of laughing at oneself.

Who else could take a war we essentially lost and make light of it?

No fireworks though please! You know how it is in November, it starts at the end of September and doesn't finish until December, and then starts against Mid-December!

We'll just have a "McDonalds party" We can see the irony in that can't we?!

"Winning" the War of Independence would have been very bad news for Britain.

Just think about it for a moment.

The population of the USA is 300 million - that of the UK is 60 million. Where would be the logical place to run that lot from? There you have your answer.

So the 4th of July should be when we Brits celebrate OUR independence.

Incidentally, the Brits didn't lose because they were "weak" - a couple of boatloads of soldiers don't really stand much chance against 13 states. And, remember, we had General Cornwallis - even more of a handicap. Furthermore, America wasn't actually considered very important at the time by people like George III.

I think we got the better part of the deal, sorry the UK that is!!!

Actually thats unfair, the USA is coping a lot of flak for George Bush and its lousy two party system, its apparent fundamentalist christian outlook and war mongering, they weren't that bad all the time and most right thinking Americans are I'm sure very decent people, Bill Bryson, Al Gore, Matt Groening etc.

Well your country fought awfully hard to try and keep us, Sweetie. "Got rid of" isn't accurate in the least.

I generally like Brits but I also generally don't like moronish twits, regardless of nationality.

EDIT- Regarding your "Additional details"... When someone is insulted, they become defensive. Your original comment is insulting so you got some defensive remarks in response.

If all you wanted was fireworks and Will Smith, you should have said so! I'd have invited you out for a visit. He goes to my gym. Yes, really. Plus we have a fantastic fireworks display where I live so you would have gotten two for the price of one! :)

Here's my olive branch...~~~%~~ :)

Lol- any excuse for a day off and a party!
(I can't believe how many people are actually taking this question as an insult, lighten up.)

I just wish the Brits would stop focusing all their energy on us. It's like being hounded by the paparazzi.

Yeah! Considering the fact that we didn't really give you a choice, you aught to at least make it look like it was your idea. Good luck with that!

why the insult?
I am a proud American.
I came here from Thailand 8 years ago and this country has welcomed me. I am a citizen that has embraced this country and lives life to the fullest. I am living the American dream.
My father was British, and my mother was Thai.
Don't bring shame on part of my heritage or insult my country and citizenship.
