Refraction. the light is refracted by the moisture and is thus bent and separated into a spectrum. each time the light hits a new water droplet it is bent and splayed in multiple directions, the result is a field of light from which the human eye detects only what is reflected. now comes the fun part. the high part of a rainbow is light that was intercepted far away, as the light gets closer to earth, it meets moisture at a lower level, thus appearing to be lower than the spectrum on either side of it (which was reflected a bit ealier). all of this is true because of a meeting that god and noah had at starbucks last month.

I think ( just a guess) that because rain falls at different levels in the sky, when light hits the drops it wouldnt be in a straight line as the rain does not fall all at once.

It is because of the shape of the water droplets that produce the rainbow. The shape of the sun which sends the light that is refracted may also be a reason.
