I've lived in Southern California for 20 years. I'll be moving to Abbeville, LA in a couple of months - not particularly because I want to, but to stay close to family who's also moving there. I've heard some things about the state that have me a bit worried, like racism and the hurricanes. I'd like some information from some people who know the area to let me know what exactly I'm getting myself into.

Hmmm. Well I am from Louisiana. Hurricanes are not a big deal so forget that worry. I guess that sound blase after Katrina, but if you are told to evacute then do it and have current flood insurance rather it is required or not. Katrina was mostly poor people. This is unfortunate but true. Most people did not have a way to evacuate. Just make sure you have flood insurance and a car. There is racism but what you have heard is probably exaggerated. I was in Portland, OR and was suprised at the racism their against Hispanics, and when I was in France was surprised at the racism against Muslims so I don't think this is too much of a culture shock. Racism everywhere and I don't think we have more than any other place.

Some great things we do have are southern hospitality. People you don't know will speak to you, hold the door open for you, and help you when you need help. Our food is supurb. Seriously our food and coffee are great. Make sure you drink Community Dark Roast.

Abbeville is pretty laid back so you should be relaxed and away from all the stress of the city.

I love Louisiana. I live in Baton Rouge but am from Shreveport. I am sure you will like it after a mint julip or two. Good Luck

Southern Louisiana is odd.....

And it all depends on the area.

I can't tell you about Abbeville in particular just southern Louisiana in general.................... and this come from experience of over 30 years ago.... but I doubt it has changed much.

I lived in Houma, and found that there were so many people from out of state because of the oil industry it wasn't a whole lot different that any where else in the country.

I lived in Donaldsonville and found things totally different.........

Gonzales was different too....

husband found out the hard way too that it just depends on where you are at too....... Being in the oil industry he came in to contact with a lot of diffferent people............ most of the time everyoje was very nice to him.... but one time he stopped to watch a pool tournament and was attack when his companion went to the john. Wound up in the hospital for a wek with surgery to the eye socket....... didn't press charges because of that pariishes laws, everyone gets involved gets arrrested and jailed until sorted out.

I've always said that living south of Alexandria was living in a different world... I don't think that has change much i the 30 years since I ived there....... just my humble opionion

They just had a big hurricane recently, but natural disasters of that magnatude are not an everyday occurence. As for the racism, there is racism EVERYWHERE so I wouldn't let that bother you. Louisianna is a great place. Great culture, nice people, and a laid-back atmosphere.
