The world can happily sustain 10 billion people. At the moment we have almost reached 6 billion. 100 years ago that figure was just 2 billion. Because of the industrial revolution, huge swathes of farming communities moved into the towns amd cities. Ever since the population has exploded. As the population becomes congested, rampant diseases have taken hold, only to be pegged back by advances in medicine. But some of these diseases are ready to strike back with devistating consequenses. people are emmigrating, bringinning new viruses and diseases with them, just look back at the Americas. Or Europe during the black death, spanish flu etc. You see, Mother Nature always has the upper hand. She will not allow here little nest to overflow. Because outside the viruses wait. Diseases lurk in darkened places, just waiting to swamp any close nit, or over populated community. Climate change will be a cause of over populating and will strike down mankind with frequency until the right balance is achieved. Global warming will obliterate crops, forcing starvation on the millions who depend on the nutrition. What ever milestone we reach, there will always be markers along the way, expressing sympathy for those who fell behind. History will teach us that you can never underestimate nature. We have had 5 mass extinctions in the Earths history, each one getting nearer to the last one, with more species getting dragged into the pit of failed evolutionary changes. Who speaks for Earth then?.

A lot of people would think "well there's a lot of unused space, countryside etc", but like you said you have to look after the nature side of things, the more people there are the more resources get used up. It's great that the "green" issue is more of a focal point, but to be honest this should have been focal 15-20 years ago, maybe in another 15-20 years society will have got this issue locked on sight and maybe as a result create a plentiful less polluted world, let's hope irreversible damage hasn't already been done on the whole.

As others have said nature will find a way of balancing things. I remember hearing the theory of Gaia's revenge, which sees the earth as a living being that will cure herself of the human parasite.

I truly believe that the earth will balance everything. Be it through earth quake, illness, famine, ect. Personally I think it will be through plague.

The earth has a top capacity, when the population goes over that capacity there will be less food, starvation, sickness, ect. The population will begin to die off in large numbers, fall far below the capacity line, and then stop. Eventually over decades of the population will go up and down, it will eventually leveling off at a level below what earth can sustain life at.

I believe that once the popluation has died out, the earth will remain. Basically no matter what we do, short of blowing up the earth, we can ever only possibly kill ourselves and the majority of other life forms. So say we do that, what happens next? the earth is a wasteland, stripped of life and nature and the wonderful things that we live for anyways. Then small organisms develop. The earth repopulates, but with less harmful species now. Slowly, Mother Nature rebuilds and recovers. After god knows how long, the earth could be as abundant as it was before humans even existed. My point is this; although the earth can easily survive without humans, we cannot survive without the earth, so no matter what happens be sure that while we perish, mother nature lives on, wounded she may be. I guess i feel contented with the fact that even if we screw up, our wonderful environment will live on and human existence will perish, but that is an easy sacrifice if the land remains. So while it is devastating what is happening, be sure to understand that the only species we are harming is ourselves.

First of all, the world is not overpopulated.. It seems as if the world is overpopulated bcos resources r available in plenty but r not used properly, so it bcomes very difficult to meet even the basics of living. Might sound strange but it's TRUE... Infact, population is the biggest asset of a country, then why not admire it!!! We need population to run the world properly... We hav jobs; we hav resources; we hav land, but we don't use them properly..

And the most important thing is that the world will never get overpopulated bcos birth rate and death rate both exist; if there is BIRTH, there is DEATH too... So there is sort of a balance in the population... And the death of animals and MAN goes on in order to take care of the ecological balance( balance in nature ).. So, there's no question of overpopulation...

Good question. Until now, most politicians have tried to avoid addressing this issue, but global warming awareness has brought this problem back to light again.

I think it could be possible to restrict population's rate of growth through perfectly fair and ethical means; the real problem seems to be the repercussions this would have in the western world economic system . You know, if not enough children are born, they can fill the gaps with immigrants, but if there were not enough immigrants...who would they sell their products to?

If we want to survive, sooner or later we'll need to find a way of controlling global population growth. Or else, emigrate to mars.

The concept of overpopulated is the concept of Malthus. The world will never be over populated. If you see deserts, artic and atlantic regions you will find that almost 50 percent of the area of the Earth is unpopulated/under populated. It is only matter of years to find out technology to live in those areas. If man can live in space, why not on earth.Under sea living, towns and cities under sea are possible.Micro food, which is to be taken in tablet form ,may make cultivation for food unnecessary/limited.Natural calamities, wars, epidemic etc will control population. With increase in medical care aged persons will be more, birthcontrol, sex with out pregnancy etc will result in decline in reproduction capacity/stagnant population,if not decining. So the fear of over poplation is unfounded. In fact "nature "itself is subject to change and modification according to requirements. So be happy.Forget about an overpopulated Earth.

The earth has a way of balancing itself, hence plagues, earthquakes, storms, etc. However, man has been developing lots of ways to survive these and so things are getting out of balance in our artificial environments.

However, if there are too many people for the earth to support then these people will start fighting each other for food, resources, water, etc. and war deaths will take care of a lot of them.

One can only hope we all, or a significant number of us anyway, die before we kill everything else.

There are diseases that naturally control the population, however bad that may sound, and there are those who die young from childhood diseases. Diseases like diabetes. and hear failure and cancer kill people every day, and those have no cure, treatments, but no cure. And with the tendency to go green, and live with less dependence on chemicals, people will also die from all the garbage we have released into the atmosphere. The earth does it's share of purging in addition to providing life.
