x86 is 32 bit CPU. If a computer is using a Pentinum IV processor, it is a x86. If a computer is using a Itanium or Athlon 64 processor it is 64 bit. Itanium is a special kind of 64 bit processor, and there is some software that will ONLY work on itanium based systems. 32 bit applications will run on 64 bit processors, but 64 bit applications wont run on 32 bit processors. There very few 64 bit programs yet, so it's not too bad to use a x86 base CPU.
