The Grand Canyon Lodge and it is on the North Rim.

Here is a great site on the canyon, what there is to do and see and the hotels.

If you are looking for the National Park experience, then the El Tovar is the indeed best. However in Tusyan (the town just out of the park gates) you can find a number of motel chains, all normally charging a premium during the summer.
Another option is the hotels is Williams or Flagstaff, from Williams you can ride the GC Railway to the canyon or its a short drive to the canyon. The advantage of staying in Williams and Flag are evening entertainment/dining as everything at the GC can be very expensive during peak seasons.

If you are driving to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas you are mostly likely going to the South Rim. That is about a 5 hour drive on mostly 2-lane roads. Good roads but with trucks and campers too.

The best hotel because it is historic and rustic is the El Tovar. It sits right on the canyon edge. But you are not likely to get reservations there unless you make them well in advance, like 3 or 4 months or more. But there are plenty of hotels just outside the park gates. Places like Best Western, Ramada, Days Inn, and some non-chain hotels too. Try these web sites below.
