I consider myself a libertarian...I'm liberal on some stuff and conservative on others. I have friends from both sides of the political spectrum...some are real hard core in their beliefs. I just remind them and myself an African Proverb:

A wise man never knows all, only fools know everything.

Political beliefs is just a facet of what is a gem of friend.

I don't ask someone what their party is, ever. That is supposed to be private and is only something that the person themselves can reveal. I would be very skeptical of someone who prejudges anyone else by the party they were in. I am sure that I have friends who are Republican, Democratic, Libertarian, Green, etc. I have guesses as to which are which but I don't know.

Could you be friends with someone who had a litmus test for friendship? I mean, really, how sad.

Not at all. Good friends don't ruin a great friendship by arguing politics. People have much more in common than what separates them.

We have friends who are definitely Republican, and we love each other dearly.

I think tolerance is very much needed between friends, every person has his own point of view. It doesn't matter if your friend has different opinion from you. You can discuss all matters with strong arguments.

i like having friends i can disagree with from time to time, it keeps us all thinking about issues from more than one point of view.

As long as they're intelligent enough to debate their opinions with factual information rather than typical liberal name calling.

And to remain friends, we seldom bring it up.
