Felons are usually Democrats. As Lott notes: "Michael Milken, Martha Stewart and Leona Helmsley share something in common besides being convicted felons – they are all Democrats. While their wealth sets them apart from the typical felon, their party registration is the same as most former convicts."

I believe this point was subtly highlighted when Willie Horton told the press in 1988 that of course he supported Michael Dukakis for president. "According to academic studies," Lott says, "from 1972 to 1996, on average, 80 percent of felons would have voted Democratic. An overwhelming 93 percent ostensibly would have voted for Bill Clinton in 1996."

Lott compares the voting patterns of felons and non-felons, controlling for race, age, education level, religious habits, employment, age and country of residence. Wholly apart from all these factors, felons were still more likely to vote Democratic. Indeed, in the 2004 election, Lott says, felons in Washington state "voted exclusively for Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry."

With so many felons being Democrats, the party might want to think about changing its mascot from a donkey to a jailbird.

Needless to say, Democrats are neurotically obsessed with restoring the right to vote to felons. But the ex-cons themselves rarely express any interest in regaining this particular right. What ex-cons want is the right to own a gun. "Felons," Lott says, "who frequently live in poor, high-crime neighborhoods, want to be able to defend themselves."

So the evidence is in on that one, too: Preferring the right to bear arms to the right to vote (for choice), convicted felons have a superior value system to liberals.

Awesome, but you know any liberal who isn't scared enough to ignore this question probably didn't make it past "Felons are usually democrats". That's fantastic though... And given those numbers there's no way that the conclusion is wrong.

To counter Annie... The very principals upon which this country was formed go something along the lines of if you work hard you can get ahead... obviously those poor people in jail didn't work as hard as they should've... It's called Capitalism!

And PSU whatever your completely wrong! it says right there in the article "80 percent of felons would've voted democratic" and if 93% wanted to vote Clinton... hmmm isn't he democratic? Enron was a company retard not a convicted felon... And if someone is dumb enough to write "correct in creating correct television" i'd want to be doing the exact opposite of that moron... Sounds like your a liberal who doesn't know anything... let alone the world.

Mr Prioritize your life... The people in the tally were convicted... therefore guilty and don't have bond or bail available to them... No one is above the law. There's a reason those people got pardoned, look harder, hell look! And Watergate Hmmm, who's fault was that "I DON'T RECALL" Gee doesn't that sound familiar.

Mr. YuckFou my apologies, i suppose some of your readers got through the first paragraph.

Wow. You only have examples of democratic felons. There are equal amounts of republican felons as well.

Exhibit A: Enron.

And if you seriously believe Trent Lott (if it is this Lott in the article) is a good mentor on ethics, then you seriously need to check yourself.

Ethics knows no party system. Sounds like your a smug republican who thinks he knows the world too well and thinks that FOXNews is correct in creating correct television instead of delivering correct journalism.

Hate to burst your bubble, but there are a lot of republican criminals as well. The thing is they have the money to get out of going to jail and/or make themselves above the law - just ask Libby. I remember Nixon getting pardoned as well. Oh, I forgot about the Watergate Scandal. Wait, there way Lay, Abramoff, KKK members who vote republican, Skinheads...

In other words, stop with the hypocrisy. It's sad...

Hmmm...my two felonious uncles are Republican. Both have been arrested more times than I care to count.

I'm independent with liberal leanings and have never even been close to being arrested. None of my liberal friends have either. Can't say the same for my Republican friends...hmmm. I think your statistics may be a bit slanted.

It's probably pretty close to equal, actually.

P.S. Felons CAN'T vote, so your argument doesn't really make sense.

Give me something to refute. All you've done is copy and past a section of an article written by Ann Counter where she "quotes" his work. I'll base my opinion on the original source material, not on Coulters summary.

My guess is that the reason that most criminals support democrats is because of what democrats stand for- trying to narrow the gap between the extremely rich and the extremely poor in this country. in general democrats support more public systems whereas republicans are more centered on business.
the scandals in the republican party seem contrary to this study though...

How can felons be smarter than liberals when most felons ARE liberals? That doesn't make sense!

"Duke" Cunnngham, Scooter Libby, "Kenny boy" Lay, Jeff Schilling, Ollie North, G. Gordon Liddy are Liberals? They are all convicted felons.

Spending an hour inspecting ones bellybutton does not a "study" make.

wow. that is pretty one sided.

by felons do you mean republicans?

remember the 80's? - IRAN CONTRA SCANDAL

doesn't get more criminal in nature or republican than that...should I bring up Enron next?

Point is ALL politicians are inherently criminal - you have to be to be sucessful.
