Homosexuality can be seen and it is seen as something wrong. Many homosexuals are marginalised because of their orientation. That is why it is socially marginal, only the rich or famous have been socially accepted. However there are many important painters, writers, philosophers, politicians that were known as open homosexuals even if they married and had children. Their contribution to our culture is invaluable. That is why homosexuality is symbolically central. Just think about the Roman Catholics and their inner homophobia. Then look at the representations of Jesus -how camp is that? Saint Sebastian is a prototype of BD/SM, etc. There is a huge subtle irony in all that.
Just hope you are enjoying yours and taking precautions!
Enjoy your life without prejudices!

I doubt that straight people would tolerate someone commenting on, or telling them what they can do in the privacy of their whatever!
Gays simply want to be left alone! They do however have a right to stand up against bigotry of any kind, wherever it rears its ugly head!
Society can mind its own business and concentrate on other issues, like an unjust war, homelessness hunger, health care, prescription drugs and availability! There are just to many other thing to worry about!
As for (symbolically central) What are you talking about? We have two social symbols, MONEY and STATUS!

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by this comment, but I do know what I think about homosexuality and I can't believe so many people are against it.
Personally, I think it's alright. Who are any of us to say what others can of cannot do? And it's no a sickness, it's genetically proven that someone is homosexual. I did a report on it in school...
I could go on and on about this topic, but I won't. I'll just say to people who think its a sickness or something stupid like that:
Stop being so f-ing close minded! Who are you to criticize anyone else's life? Get over yourself and just accept it because it's not going anywhere. Marriage isn't for procreation, it's for love and a person has the right to love anyone, boy or girl. You don't choose who you love. Anyone who's been in a relationship knows that.

I've heard this argument about feminity in Christianity, very powerful symbolically but marginalised within the church.
I don't see much evidence for central homosexual symbolism, maybe you could give some examples. I also don't think homosexuality is particuarly marginal anymore.

Socially marginal, eh? Tell that to Graham Norton! Symbolically central? Only to people who have nothing better to worry about!

It is socially marginal, simply because a small minority are actually homosexual. It has however acquired a symbolism due to the fact that it is one of the big conflicts between older Conservative morality and liberal morality.

Because homosexuality is socially stigmatised as a avoidable variable although there is power within the ghetto that transpires outside and makes part of everyday’s life.
Bon courage!
