It isn't statutory rape if the guy is married to her. If her parents sign a form that gives her permission to marry, then, in the legal sense, she is an emancipated adult and can choose her own sexual partners. Legally, the guy isn't doing anything wrong. Now, there's another problem with this. Obviously, they were dating before she married him, and THAT is wrong. They shouldn't have been dating in the first place. I would have talked with my daughter and tried to get her to understand that marrying so young isn't a good thing. Also, I would try to figure out why she wanted to marry someone that is more of a father to her than a husband. If she wants to act like an adult, I would treat her as one and be up front about the issues that I had with union. I would ask her about what she plans to do about children, making money for the home, her education, and so on. I would get her to face the hard issues that is involved in a marriage -- things she may not have thought about at all. Hopefully, if getting her to see the truth of the situation, I would get her to change her mind. However, I would not, under ANY circumstances, allow her to marry the guy. I would change schools and get the coach far, far away from her. I would file a compliant and get his job for what he did. No one should date someone that they have a professional relationship with much less that he could be her DAD!

If that happened with my daughter, I would take the information straight to the school and the authorities. I would then not let my daughter out of my sight until the whole thing was COMPLETELY taken care of and the CHILD MOLESTER in jail. If the situation were not handled locally, I would call Chris Hansen in to do a full story on it, and I would tell the police and the school system that they had blown their chance to remain anonymous. I would then show my daughter all the love I possibly could even through her rage and tears, and I would move if I had to.
Someday that girl is going to resent the hell out of her parents. I know--I come from a North Carolina town where the same behavior ran rampant in the schools. The coaches prey on the girls who admire them instead of being flattered but protective over them. It's a circus there. I've witnessed it more times than you can imagine.
When you ask what the world's coming to, you've got to understand that in the '80's when I was in high school there, no one did ANYTHING about it, and it didn't make the news. TWO girls in my town married the coaches, and no one did a thing. Now, they married them when they were around 20, but they had been sleeping with them since they were 16. It just makes me sick, but it's actually progress that it made the news.

That's insane! If your daughter isn't talking to you because she wants to marry as a TEENAGER to someone much older that she, just tell her she's crazy if she thinks they'd let her marry! Yes, i guess it would be rape, but they are married...I bet that marriage will last a year or two before people finally come to their senses to realize that a teenages marrying people in their middle age is crazy. I mean, now when she gos to track practice, she'll be all "Hi, sweetie" and crap. It's totally out of control. What IS the world coming to? I would have said, "After college when you have a job you can marry." Those parents are push overs, i say just let her see the mistake she's making on her own. If you're going to marry, i say that you have to be at least in your 20's. Maybe someday the girl, the coach, and the parents will realize what they've done; screwed everything up.

I saw that article before; that's DISGUSTING. I think the school and parents should have stepped in when the coach was driving her home, etc. (She was only 14 and a freshmen when that was happening!) What is wrong with the coach?!? And, first her parents don't know she's dating an older man, and THEN they sign marriage consent forms? What the hell is wrong with them?!? ;-0

Hell no. I wouldn't let my 16-year-old marry anyone let alone a 40-year-old. That's way too young to get married. You haven't even finished high school at that age.

I don't think it is in her best interest but i really hope I am wrong and she and both of them are happy..
But how much different would it be if she was 20 and he is 44, she is older and had more time to mature.. I have met lots of 16 and older women that do know more about life than most do so who knows .. hope she is okay that is all

I heard that to, and its sad. That man is so much older then her, he could be her DAD. And right now, I am not interested in middle aged men yet! I'm not that age yet! If my daughter did that, she wouldn't be leaving the house for a long time (never).

She wouldn't be speaking to me for a very long time & I'd be questioning the maturity of the 40 year old.
I have a 13 yr. old daughter & I'd have that coach very afraid.
