And why would the founders put in the bill of rights a right for the government to have? Weren't they all for restricting the government's power over the people? One would think that the second amendment would be contrary to every other right that the people retained. Well, smart people, anyway.

the second amendment is there for two reasons. to help defend ourselves against foreign and domestic invaders and to keep our government from getting out of hand. it's a safeguard against an out of control government.

Most people do not understand the second amendment.

The problem is there is a collective view and an individual view. Both of which contain good points and bad points.

Basically the second amendment is collective because an individual is only protected in keeping arms for the militia and serving in the militia. This is so the militia can never be destroyed by the federal government. These are both social responsibilities rather than anything selfish. You may go hunting with your guns because you want to, but this is not protected by the 2A for example.

The individual side is that an individual has the "right" to keep guns, and to bear arms in the militia. However it can be limited, after due process because these people are considered to have gone against society, and therefore won´t protect society when the time of need comes about.

People attempt to say that bearing arms is carrying arms, not so, carry and conceal is not protected, hunting is not protected. This does not mean that the government can infringe upon these things, nor that people cannot do them, it means the second amendment does not protect them.

No, in the first place, people have rights, the government has powers and authorities. Why would a government that already had the authority to raise an army under the original unamended constitution feel the need to write a second amendment to make government ownership of guns legal? Absurd.

Secondly,the ACLU knows damn well who "the people" are in the First Amendment. Whenever they claim "the people" in the Second Amendment is referring to someone else they reveal what a bunch of lying hypocritical slugs they are.

No. They would have nothing to do with trying to work for less taxing and spending, or eliminating the minimum wage law, other examples of regulating how employers treat their employees, or scaling back stringent environmental regulations. In the Griswold v. Conn. case, 1965, the Sup. Ct. said "we are met with a wide range of questions that implicate the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. Overtones of some arguments suggest that Lochner v. New York, should be our guide. But we decline that invitation. ... We do not sit as a super-legislature to determine the wisdom, need, and propriety of laws that touch economic problems, business affairs, or social conditions. This law, however, operates directly on an intimate relation of husband and wife and their physician's role in one aspect of that relation." Libertarians do not say "however" and change the topic of when they do not like government regulations.

Those who oppose gun ownership are either mentally deficient, mentally blind, or just plain stupid.

Had the founding fathers of this country not had guns there would not have been a revolutionary war. The founders realized that a government in itself is toothless it is when men get in there and try to force their will on others that problems arise. When this happens you have two choices 1. accept it and move on or 2. Fight back. When the British tried to force the colonies to pay taxes yet refused to give them a voice in the government They fought back with guns. The founders realized that one day we may need to fight back against the government they were creating.

the ACLU does not state that the government is the only ones allowed to have guns,they are somewhat neutral. when were you denied your second amendment rights? i'm assuming you are not a felon.

Yes, the 2nd amendment right to keep and bear arms is a group right, It gives each of us the right to defend freedom against groups that would take freedom from us...

Amendment I
