It's a tie between Boston and Queen for me. Two of the best bands ever of the 1970's.

So sorry for you. Victim of temporal provinciality, it would seem. The best music was made between 1964-1973, so the best bands of the 70's were 60's holdovers. Bands that got their start in the 70's were simply not as good. They had to follow some stiff competition who had plowed most of the creative ground already.

Queen had two defects; A lead singer with an extremely effeminate vocal style (listen to how much better Queen's mediocre music sounds with their new lead singer, Paul Rogers of Bad Company), and mediocre music, especially the cheesy lead guitar by Brian May that always used the same timbre.

As for Boston, they were an encouragement. When they came out, it seemed real kick-*** unhypenated rock & roll was dying. But it took almost a decade to come out with their second album, and it showed ZERO creative evolution on the part of Tom Scholz. Plus their only vocalist was the late Brad Delp, and multitracking his vocals gave them an offputting disembodied sound.

Queen's a great choice. I wouldn't forget about Pink Floyd or Aerosmith (back when they did original music and not songs that all sound the same) either. I am also a bit of metal head, so I would have to give props to Black Sabbath.

Well, my absolute favorite group of the era is the Carpenters. Still, your question is regarding bands. In that respect, I feel that Fleetwood Mac possesses immeasurable talent: the haunting wavering, and longing of Stevie Nicks contralto along with the trademark drum rhythms and natural utilization of bells and harmonic sound connect the listener to their songs in a very personal way. For that reason, Fleetwood Mac is my pick. My favorite is "Rhiannon" (hope I spelled that correctly).
