No, we no longer lack equal rights as far as the law goes. It is taking a bit longer to get the fact that we are equal out to the (rural) public. That said, I feel fully protected by the laws here. Since Trudeau was prime minister (1967? ish) though gay sex has not been illegal.('The government has no right in the bedrooms of the nation.'). None of this means that homophobia does no longer exist..it still does--it is just that the laws now work for me. One of the remaining hurdles for us, that I see, is gay hate crimes being recognized. The problem being that the courts don't seem to be able to determine what a hate crime is. Common sense tells gay people that it was a hate crime--but courts act differently. Another bone of contention is the young offenders act..where people cannot be tried in adult court if they are under 18...it allowed 3-- 17'ish year old men to beat Aaron Webster to death with golf clubs and baseball bats in a gay cruising area with minor punishments. We still have a ways to go.

Not being Canadian I can only make an educated guess. I would assume (I know), that they still face some of the same discrimination's that we Americans face. Hate crimes, Gay bashing, spoken slurs against them etc. I have been to Toronto on vacation and I loved the city and the country. I was openly gay at the time and didn't have any negative experiences. I went to a few shows. Phantom of the Opera (which was unbelievable) and Beauty and the Beast (awesome). I loved my vacation there, it was during the winter and the underground tunnels were fun lots of cool shopping inside out of the bad weather.

Doesn't it just hurt you that you can drive 3 or so hours north, cross an imaginary man made line in the sand and if you lived there you would be treated by the government differently?

Canada legalized gay marriages?!?!? you'd think i would know, being Canadian..anyway...i'm sure all of the small, religious towns don't give equal rights to gay people. here in Toronto, it's pretty good for them, i think. there's a gay pride parade every year, and i don't hear of much discrimination towards them (i live in Toronto).
