The point I am trying to make is that the war really doesn't seem to affect most people. They complain about it or believe it's the right thing to do. But if our son, daughters, and friends were suddenly about to have to go to Iraq, maybe Americans would rise up and say enough is enough.

Don't judge me for my question. It's all about starting a discussion...hopefully without name calling.

Well under the current US draft law.
There are no deferments, except
1.if you are a college student, you can defer until the end of the current semester.
2. If a parent was killed in action, thier children can request deferment.
The current draft law, has the draft starting at age 20 and going up to age 26.
18 and 19 year olds would not be drafted.
A draft does not mean everyone gets drafted.
They only draft people if they cannot get enough volunteers.
Even during Vietnam, only 10% of the people eligible for the draft, were actually drafted.

What could be more patriotic than not going to war unless we have been attacked here at home. No Saddam Hussein was in any way connected with 9/11. By the way if you visit the FBI's most wanted page you will find that the 9/11 attacks are not listed as reasons that Osama Bin Laden is wanted. Why? Because the FBI says that "there is no credible evidence to link him to the events of 9/11". So basically we are fighting 2 wars against countries that have done nothing to warrant our invading them.
If we stick to a policy like we wont need to keep training more cannon fodder. You my misguided friend are just another war mongering fool.

I am in favor of universal military training for all United States Citizens (and those who want to be) I think our security would be greatly improved if everyone knew that every individual in the country had commando training and could protect themselves and those around them. I would institute a basic 6 month training course, after which the individual could select from various options such as Military Service as needed for an additional 2.5 years, Peace Corp service to improve the situation for humanity where it was needed in the world for 2.5 years, or border, port, or airport security for 2.5 years. Anyone honorably completeing that service should be awarded the equivalent of an Associate Degree in a course of study of their chosing that they would succesfully complete.
Conscientious objectors could elect to serve in medical, quartermaster, and other non-combat areas or the peace corp, but everone would serve the 3 years in some capacity.
I beleive this would greatly strengthen our country, be beneficial to the education of our youth, solve gang and drug problems, etc.
I have been advocating this program since 9/12/01.

I was opposed to the Viet Nam conflict and killing in general.I worked on an air force base as a civilian contractor. All men are not Killers.I am not surprised that an increasing number of women are volunteering for combat duty.No to the conscription.

Enlisting means you voluteer for service. A draft means that you are brought into the military if you want to or not. Perhaps you could set it up so that the only way you gain the power to vote or run for political office is to serve a tour in the Armed Forces.

All I have to say is just look at Viet Nam... that was a draft war and look what happened, no one wanted to fight and the Americans lost... Drafts don't work, a volunteer military is the only way to go...

I'd go for the national service concept, but I don't think it should have to be military.
Think about it; we have a hard time getting Americans to take certain jobs, right? Why not two years picking crops; two years fighting fires; two years teaching school; two years on highway maintenance crew.....room and board and a small stipend.

i think that there should be a draft, those who say that the iraq war is "phony" are wrong, however i wont start that arguement again...
stopping terrorism, spreading democracy and stabilizing the middle east are DIRECTLY CONNECTED TO HOMELAND SECURITY!!! i cannot make it any more clear
all military branches except for usaf have repeatedly missed recruiting quotas by substantial amounts-- so, yes, the us military is becoming weak and stretched thin

Yes. The constitution doesn't authorize a draft, what could be less patriotic than going against the constitution?

I sometimes think people would appreciate our freedoms more if they had to take a turn protecting them, but I believe you're going about it the wrong way. I would like to see service be mandatory for anyone who wants to run for political office though. How can you be expected to make policy decisions regarding the military if the closest you've ever been to combat is watching Saving Private Ryan?
