A friend and I want to go surfing in the next few days. This would be our first time surfing (my friend can skateboard and I can skateboad+snowboard). Now two days ago I went with another friend to the beach to chill and go swimming. My friend and I went a little deep and when we wanted to swim back in he struggled, kept getting pulled out further, swallowing water. Luckily a surfer was there to offer him a board to hold. I am a very good swimmer so I just swam back in easily. Now this friend knows how to tread water and is more fit (though im lil less fit and i can swim better) than the friend im going surfing with. I am concerned about my friend that is going swimming with me because I've known him for a long time since 4th grade and he does not swim very well at all. I know he has a board but he really is not that good at swimming. Are there any tips you can give me to help him out if he starts having trouble? Thanks.

Try to surf out in front or near a lifeguard station and where theres more people/surfers so that they could notice him and help him if he is in trouble. Of course be alert and wave the lifeguard down or call for help if your friend is struggling. Make sure the leash is on his ankle on his backfoot so he can have the board to hold onto. Have fun, be safe man.

Sounds like your friend got caught in a riptide. He could of swam at an angle or even parallel to the beach for aways, in my experience 30 feet has been plenty.

If you can't swim well, don't surf in deep water. Some water/theme parks now have wave pools and other wave machines which may be better for your friend.

If he isn't a very good swimmer, he should wear a small lifevest.
