Hi all, and good evening,

I recently got a call from one of my ex-girlfriends who was invited to a commitment ceremony. The roommate of my ex-girlfriend, who is a proud lesbian, is having a ceremony and my ex is being involved in the wedding party. I have some friends who are openly gay and lesbian, so I definitely support them. However, my ex is wearing a black tuxedo-jacket, pants, shirt, tie, cummerbund, and shoes. I was just curious to know why some women prefer to wear tuxes for these events, and if she is wearing one, should I wear one also?

She's in the wedding party, and so she will be dressed more formally. You can go in just a suit without worrying. You're still a straight couple, and you don't have to dress in formal drag just because your girlfriend is doing so.

The idea of dressing in male formal drag for women has interesting motivations. First off, men have more power, and it is one way to put on the mantle of power in a powerful ceremony. It also is a way in which the women are not seeing themselves as being "given away" by anyone.

What's more, by challenging the gender dress code, they are challenging the gender stereotyping in general, and allowing themselves to define the marriage in their own terms, not those dictated by the culture. Yet they also are simultaneously embracing a component of the culture by going through this ceremony. It's a way to integrate two disparate groups that have had trouble finding common ground until recently.

Wear whatever you feel you want to. Your ex is probably wearing it for the proud statement of support for lesbians, (the whole, opposite sex representation thing) or as a gag joke you are not in on.

Either way, you can never go wrong with a tux.

What one chooses to wear, for any occasion, is a personal choice. For a commitment ceremony, just wear something formal, whatever you want. You don't have to wear a tux just because your ex does. You never said anything about being invited...

Wear what you're comfortable in...unless you've been told there's a specific theme or dress code for the event.

It's more comfortable and most women look great in a tux.
