The garbage disposal unit isn't working in our sink. I cleaned it out and checked and both inner blades are free of food and debris, and can turn freely. I also checked beneath the unit, and the 'reset' button was pressed in like it should be.
But when I throw the switch, all the garbage disposal does is make a 'hmmmm' noise, and nothing happens.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks.

take a broom handle(wooden),with the switch off, put the end of the handle down in the disposal and using some force, make the mechanism turn 2 or 3 turns. remove the handle and try the switch. sometimes this will unjam the disposal.

At the bottom of the unit is a hex socket (six sides) that is in the end of the motor shaft. All garbage disposal units are sold with an offset hex wrench used to turn the unit in the event it jams as you have described. Any hardware store has this tool or you can use an Allen wrench of the correct size to manually turn the shaft a few revolutions to free up a unit that may have something smaller than a finger between the housing and the rotor.

I had the exact same problem two weeks ago and fixed it myself after getting a little info....
first off the two blades moving freely is not the problem....
the two blades sit on a medal plate, can't exactly remember the name it's called, but it spins and mine was stuck...it had a nail, yes a nail, stuck in between it.....I took the whole thing out and unjammed it with a crowbar and hammer and now it works fine....
My advice is to take it out and look at the medal plate and chances are something is jammed in their that is not allowing it to spin...........

When my garbage disposal did that I replaced it because I am not an electrical genius, but I can follow directions....and I managed to put it in myself. Wasn't too hard. Have fun!

the motor that drives the disposal is bad and needs to be repaired...the hmmmm noise you hear is the motor trying to start....could be something as simple as the start capacitor being bad...if it has one there will be a cap on the side that you can remove to expose the capacitor....the other reasons that it will not start are 1 bad start switch...2 bad start govenor...3 bad start windings....take it to a motor repair shop and have it checked they can tell you if it will be economical to fix...I personally have repaired many of these over the years...
