I have changed spark plugs, oil, air filter, had carb rebuilt, plug wires, and some other stuff. Could the timing be causing this? And if so, is there anything I can do myself that will help. What could i do to check ?

i would check the timing on it,those was real popular for wearing the gears in the timing out,and that made them a little sluggish on power, but they are good engines, try adjusting it at the distributor first that may help it,good luck on it.

Your vehicle needs to be diagnose and analyze to find the source of the problem. There's is just to many things and you need diagnostic equipment. Yes ignition timing and valve timing can cause loss of power. Take it to an experience mechanic, it should not be to hard to diagnose for them since your vehicle is not that new . They don't need no special scanners for that old car. It's pre OBD.

The catalytic convertor might be shot and creating too much back pressure.

Otherwise you might have a vacuum leak?

Good Luck!

I think I would trade it off. Rather old. Could be losing compression.
