We were at war! Plus it was estimated to cost about a million lives between both sides to invade Japan, therfore the bomb saved a lot of lives for both nations, not just the US!

The Japanese fought on in 1945, despite the fact that they were beaten. The Emporor and his advisors had prepared to defend the Japanese Islands to the literal last bullet, and the last breath. President Truman had been advised that if an
invasion of Japan became necessary, roughly one million casualties (US) would result, to say nothing of civilian deaths and damage to property.
So it was decided to drop the first A-bomb on Hiroshima, with the hope that this stroke would force the Emperor to order a surrender.
Sadly, although Col. Paul Tibbets flying a B-29 he named "Enola Gay" after his mother delivered the bomb right on target, the Emperor ordered that the war continue, which left Truman no choice but to order the second attack against Nagasaki.

During WWII Hiroshima was the major supply manufacturers for the Japanese empire. It had more military stores than anyother city in Japan. Nagasaki was the same. The second reason was because even though it was an industrial city it was the least populated.

To scare the Japanese into surrender, reduce overall casualties as would have resulted in an invasion, to stop russia from continuing south through Korea and the surrounding area.

to end the war and save lives on both sides, the Russians were on the way to claim japan and most people did not understand the effects of radiation at that time,,,,within 1 year America would have 12 more atom bombs, the plan was to nuke the landing beaches ,would have been a disaster, like i said radiation poison was unknown at that time..what a mess...cheers

Because the army felt the every man woman and child would have fought our army and caused mass casualties on both sides numbering in the millions. So they droped the bomb to save lives.

To end the war before we had to launch an invasion of the Japanese home islands. One that could have killed half a million American soldiers.

We nuked it so we wouldn't have to invade. Yes, there were catastrophic damages and many civilian deaths, but less than a land invasion that also would have claimed countless more American lives.
