There was an ad on TV for a half point diamond. Being as diamonds are measured in karats I would like to know what 1/2 point diamond is.

Everyone else is giving correct info, and to add- a half point diamond would measure approximately 0.75mm in diameter if it is round.

A diamond's value is not judged by its size but by its weight. A diamond's weight is measured in carats, and one carat equals one fifth of a gram, or 200 milligrams. The word comes from the plant carob - in ancient civilisations carob seeds were used to compare weight with diamonds.

Carats can be broken into 100 points, so a 0.5 carat diamond can also be referred to as a 50 point diamond, or half a carat. Carats go from 0.05 to 4 carats. Not all diamonds of the same carat will cost the same - the quality of the other three c's, the cut, clarity and colour, all have to be the same also.

don't forget to choose my answer as "the best".(hehe)

The "half point" tolerance is used in the US to ensure that the carat weight of a diamond must be measured to the thousandth of a carat and can be rounded to the nearest hundredth. So .995 carat diamond can be sold as 1 carat as can be a 1.004 carat diamond.

So what you saw on TV means that these diamonds have been carefully measured and are very close to the size they are being sold at.

100 points equal 1 carat. A 1 /2 point diamond would be 1/200th of a carat or about the size of a grain of sugar I would imagine!

A carat (when measuring gemstones) is a measure of weight. There are 100 points to a carat. A half-point carat is very tiny.
BTW, carat spelled with a C means a gem's weight/size. Karat spelled with a K is used when you talk about how pure an item of gold is.
