No, they are rated just fine where they are. At the end of the year, when they lose to USC and their bowl game, they get downgraded to a spot somewhere above 25 and below 10.
That's where they belong.

No, they should not join a conference. Penn State did just fine, thank you very much, by playing 3-4 really tough games a year, and then playing mostly eastern teams. They only joined the Big 10 because football was their only revenue producing sport-they needed the bucks.

Notre Dame doesn't need the money-they have the NBC contract. Notre Dame's schedule is about the same every year. The only difference comes when Purdue, Michigan State, Georgia Tech, Air Force, and Northwestern are having good years, their schedule goes from weak to strong.

It wasn't Penn State's fault that West Virginia, Pitt, Boston College, Syracuse, and Rutgers weren't all good at the same time. Its not Notre Dame's fault the above 5 schools aren't all strong in the same year. When Nick Saban was coaching Michigan State,Gary Barnett at Northwestern, and Drew Brees was QB at Purdue, these teams were nationally ranked, and Notre Dame played them then, and they play them now. In effect, Notre Dame is in a conference of sorts. They are a non-member/member of the Big Ten, except their non-conference schedule is USC, Goergia Tech, and the service academies.

They can afford to be independent in football, so let them be.

Hmm, a lot of pretty logically vacant answers, but one stood out as a gem of reason: if ND is overrated, it's because the media makes them out to be. That's it right there! Sure Notre Dame fans got exctied about last year before getting blown out in their three biggest games, but it was the media circus that 'rated' Notre Dame in the first place. If we go back one year and look at ESPN's predictions that ND would start 0-6 then that year Notre Dame was very UNDERrated. But I suppose if you really hate a team, or if a team has the National Championship as its goal every year, then anything less would constitute underperformance and thereby being overrated. I also suppose that if you were operating under the same set of mental constraints you would be blind the fact that Notre Dame plays a schedule that is CONSISTENTLY ranked among the toughest in the nation. While they may play Navy regularly, and the other services academies every now and then (last year was an exception), Navy managed to win 8 games last year and they certainly don't schedule any I-AA teams, which is more than most colleges can say. So before you even think about playing the schedule card, take a look at your own favourite team's schedule and realize how much cake is on it.

As a football program, I think Notre Dame is very underrated for a number of reasons. From an on-field performance standpoint, the Irish were able to make a dramatic turnaround (I don't think anyone can argue with that) with players recruited by Ty Willingham. As it stands now, ND has 17 verbal commits from some of the top recruits in the class of '12, i.e., they're certainly laying the groundwork for the future of the program. Also, the program is quite simply better run than a number of other major college peers. You don't pick up the Sports section and read about Notre Dame players going to jail, getting mixed up with drugs, calling their homies over to someone's house for a fight, firing guns-- and if you do, it's actually dealt with and disciplined (unlike Miami's so-called disciplinary actions following the FIU disaster). And of course, we all know that Notre Dame is one of the top academic institutions in the country meaning that an ND football player is putting in a lot more work doing a lot more difficult material than your average Florida or Ohio St. player. Take Brady Quinn for example, he was a Finance and Poli Sci double major. That says a lot more than the Leisure Studies majors turned out by a number of big-time football programs.

In short, last year as a team, ND was a little overrated, but that whole business is a creation of the media. As a program, they are vastly underrated because they are able to produce a competitive football team (discounting last year's three blowout losses, go look at how they performed in the same games the year before) all while adhering to much higher standards than any other competitive football program (Rice, Stanford, Duke, and Northwestern don't count because they suck at football).

Perhaps a little bit now, but you cant take away that for a long time Notre Dame was one of the premier programs in the country. I mean when I was a kid every guy dreamed of playing football at Notre Dame. But because of that losing stretch they had in the late 90's and early 2000's, now they arent quite the program they used to be back in the Lou Holtz days.

Then you probably haven't look at the schedules of Alabama or Georgia then. But whether or not they get "steamrolled" is anyone's guess. And an educated one would be no, they wouldn't. Notre Dame's defense is legit and would be able to hold down either Georgia or Alabama's offense.

Historically, hell no...They are the most storied college football program in history...In the past 10 years or so, since Lou Holtz left, they have struggled for being Notre Dame...so, maybe...

Yes. They usually play a weak schedule and the bowl record lately (0-8) shows that wins they are getting from these teams don't mean anything. Too often teams are ranked on bloated win totals, name recognition, and fan popularity. Even Charlie Weis maybe be overrated, but with the talent flocking to Notre Dame, it is going to be hard for them not to make a run at a BSC game every year. Or at least as long as they leave their schedule annually weak.

i wouldnt say their over rated, i mean after all brady quinn did play at a pretty high level and charlie wies has really turned them around in just a few years... we also have to realize that theyre an independent team, the could pick any team to play no matter how good or bad they are, yet they are always choosing to play some of the best teams in the country, for that alone i feel they should get some kudos

WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Notre Damn Dose not have a weak schedule firstly because the are in no conference they play whoever and when ever, they face USC Evey year Michigan and Michigan St and a whole lot of other teams that are constantly un-predictable on any given Saturday
AND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They are the Third Most Winning-est Team In NCAA history third only to the Great Texas Longhorns and Michigan

The are just in a bit of a slump it happens to the best teams,... Look at the Patriots or even better the Cowboys, you guys need more faith and maybe a little more knowledge

I agree with cliftonS. but just as long as they are in the top 20 they get a bowl game . I really hate notre dame.Until they join a conference instead of playing the mighty air force, army and any other high school team in the area. Then they might get my respect. Old Lou never got caught with his hand in the cookie jar there.
