For real here, no excessive idling, be light on the throttle for 500-1000k, and if on the highway, do not run a constant speed for the first 500 miles, alternate speeds on the highway, ie 65 then 75 then 65, it may seems like a pain but it is necessary. and dont downshift like the previous guy said, over-reving a motor under no load(throttle) is not how you do it.

Dear Beth-
It depends on how long ago the engine was rebuilt. If it was just last week or last month, I would say maybe.
If you have not done your first oil change on the engine, I would definately say NO.
Give the engine some time to work in. It needs that time to polish and wear the parts properly. Adding un-necessary stress to these parts before they have had a chance to wear, is a good way to do the rebuild all over again.
I hope that will help you out.

not so common sense?
it is always a good idea after any major repair to keep it local until you have sufficiently proven the repairs reliable.in fact most engine rebuilders will tell you 500 mi. break-in period. no hard acceleration and change the oil&filter then drive it normal.there are a lot of things that can go wrong with a rebuilt motor. do you want to get stranded on this road trip?
consider it a 500 mi road test.

There's a rather involved check-list for a break in period on new motors or rebuilds but the first 50 miles is really adequate for break in.
There's the "seat the rings" procedure where you take it up to speed (like 30mph) and then decelerate with the tranny by downshifting from the highest to lowest gear. This is supposed to settle the rings in since the tranny forces the motor to slow the car down. This procedure is supposed to be done like three times but think of this....
A Top Fuel car only does one run down the 1/4 mile and then gets a complete over-haul before running again. IF they can push a fresh rebuild to 13,000 rpm's with no break in period then I think you can take the new motor in family truckster for a nice quiet ride on vacation.
Just be "gentle".
Good Luck!

as long as you have over 500 miles on it you will be fine, if not then it is actually best to do city driving to break the engine in, no long periods of idling but changing speeds often

Sure, just be sure to keep all the fluid levels checked.
