I can't think of any off hand, however, my gut instincts are that there were plenty. The thing that makes liberal republicanism superior to totalitarian governments is, if one has a good dictator/king, how can this be continued when he dies? Kingships are hereditary so chance is the biggest factor. Combined with the tendency for absolute power to corrupt, chances are slight that a people will continually get good dictators. Dictators keep and pass on the dictatorship by raw power. Again, it is unlikely that a benevolent dictator will be succeeded by one. While absolute government is very efficient, the long-term effect of the people having the power to decide who are their leaders outweigh this because efficient government, when bad, is detrimental overall.

One possibility is the Ataturk. He had absolute power and changed Turkey into a secular republic. The Turkish military was empowered to protect this secularism and has intervened when Islamacists were voted to power, deposed them, then returned the country to a republic.

It depends on who wrote the history book. One man's dictator is another man's champion of the cause. More times than not, I would guess that dictators feel they are doing what is in the best interest of the people as they understand it, but the rest of the world doesn't see their actions as beneficial. I guess there needs to be some kind of determining criteria that definesboth dictator and best interest of the people to answer this question fairly.
