Right now, I'm in heavy rehearsals for "The Wiz". I'm playing the Wiz, and my director and I decided to stray away from the "typical" way of playing the character. He wanted to highlight me playing the piano, so I make my entrance through these massive gates with smoke and fire - while playing a grand piano! It's so much fun. I also use the piano to express my crazy emotions throughout the show. For example, when Dorothy says "You gotta help me get home Mr. Wiz!", I slam down the keys and scream back "I don't gotta do anything!" :P I thought maybe we should do my character kind of like Elton John, and so I get to wear this green tux and HUGE sunglasses. And we're going to work "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" into the part where the Wiz leaves Oz. However, a few rehearsals ago, we tried doing the whole entrance with the green smoke and fire and all that jazz, but the smoke ended up being to heavy and you couldn't see me at all for the first 30 seconds or so of my song! So we're working on getting the smoke to be a little less aggressive, because otherwise I'll look like the tornado - and that's not the part I'm playing. :P

I was Princess Winifred in "Once Upon a Mattress", the musical version of the story The Princess and the Pea. Anyway, my character had to crawl up this ten foot wall out of a moat around this castle, and THEN fall backwards from the ten foot platform back into the moat. So, needless to say, I was terrified to fall backwards off a ten foot platform onto another platform five feet down (the platform was covered with pillows and everything, but still!) One night during a performance, I fell off the platform, as rehearsed, but I landed wrong on my side. I had to perform the rest of the show hobbling around on stage like an old crippled woman! It was AWFUL! Nevertheless, it was the most amazing show I have ever done, and the experiences I had, (both good and bad) will stick with me forever! :)

Brace yourself for inevitable eye-rolls!
I was in Cats. Yep, the show with the blaring song, "Memory".
I'll take you back to a year ago, April of 2006, to be precise. This is when my drama teacher announced that we would be doing Cats. I groaned, inwardly and outwardly, because I hated the show. To be honest, I knew nothing about the show except the song "Memory" and that the cast wore unitards. I was already dismayed!
Over the summer, I researched the show and saw a production of it. I kept telling myself that it just wasn't impressive, mainly because I felt like I simply couldn't do it. It was at this point that I decided that I wanted Grizabella, because I'm a singer and not a dancer. Other people in my drama department who planned to audition were already virtually casting the show. They always had me as either Grizabella or Jellylorum. I scoffed at the name Jellylorum! Who would want a character named Jellylorum? Jelly donut cat. Plus, then I would have a reason to dance and that terrified me.
By December during the dance auditions, I was kind of falling in love with the show if only because the makeup is just so much fun to do. During the vocal auditions, I stuck out like a sore thumb auditioning for Grizabella. Every other girl belted, and I was the silly girl who sang it in head voice. Granted, my head voice is louder than most, but still. What was I thinking?
So I got Jellylorum, which I hated at first, because really, who wants to be the Jelly donut cat? Over time, though, I fell in love with the character and the songs she sings. It helped that the director also gave me a lot more to sing than Jellylorum's songs.
The show was soo stressful. So much dancing, so much singing, so much freaking REHEARSAL. I have no idea how I pulled off being in Cats AND school to this day. I was definitely going insane from the show and the cast. By all-day tech rehearsal, I was just losing my mind hoping that we could pull Cats off.
But lo and behold, show weekend came. I don't think I ever loved Cats until the curtain call of opening night. The audience just jumped to their feet even as we sang the last notes of the finale, "The Addressing of the Cats." Which made me tear up, which was hard, since I was singing the ultra-high soprano part. :-D I'm weird, forgive me. By closing night, I was so sad that the show was over and that the experience- stressful and wonderful at the same time- was over.
I'm telling you this story because I want to show how someone can go into a show absolutely hating it and then absolutely adoring it by the time it's over. Musicals do that to you :)

Loved Thoroughly Modern Millie. I like the stage version much better than the film version, especially the ending :-)
Spoiler:
Miss Dorothy ends up with the Ching Ho the Chinese laundry boy instead of Millie's wealthy boss, Trevor Graydon.

The last one was "Music Man " as Charlie Cowell/Hill understudy.
The rotten so-and-so stayed healthy throughout the entire run.

"Bye, Bye Birdie," was fun, if for nothing else than how ridiculous it was. The music for that was fun.
"Peter Pan" was... It just was. It was working with kids, and flying, and interesting numbers...
