if your doing a presentation, heres a sweet and simple one you can do.

using a transparent plastic bottle, puncture a small hole in it such that there is a steady parabolic stream coming out from it. shine a laser pointer "through" the stream, from the back, ie through the bottle. the beam will be reflected inside along the parabolic stream. kinda like the laser beam bending. really cool. especially with a green laser. just get a basin in case it gets messy

In 1958, the Cadillac Motor Car Division of General Motors experimented with a water-sensitive switch that triggered various electric motors to close the convertible top and raise the open windows of a specially-built Eldorado Biarritz model, in case of rain.

The first such device appears to have been used by General Motors, for that same purpose, in a concept vehicle designated "Le Sabre" and built seven years earlier, in 1950-51.

Nowadays, rain sensors are integrated in a system to automatically start the windscreen wipers (intelligent windscreen wipers).

The most common rain sensor implementation is based on the prinicple of total internal reflection: an infrared light is beamed at a 45-degree angle into the windshield from the inside near the lower edge — if the glass is wet, less light makes it back to the sensor, and the wipers turn on.

Suitable for a project (but not an improvised material) would be some fiber optic cables. For improvised materials, put a flashlight in a water tank or swimming pool. Aim it at the surface. If the angle is low enough, you will likely get TIR.
