There are thought to be seven pairs of ruby slippers, of which the whereabouts of five are known. Each has an estimated value of $1.5 million, making them the most expensive Hollywood memorabilia. They have been dubbed by some as "The Holy Grail" of all Hollywood nostalgia.

There were "several pairs" made for Judy Garland in the film, and wikipedia says there are 4-5 authentic pairs left now, and they were covered with burgundy colored sequins.

I don't know how many pair were made, but I do know they were glitter and sequins on top of pumps with low heels.
