One night my cat was staring at a point in space. On a lark, my girlfriends little brother took a picture with his phone of that point. When the picture came up, there was a orb of light in the picture. A few minutes later, he took a picture of the same place. No orb.

Haha, I actually wouldn't doubt it. Some people have that sense as well. Cats probably have a lot of instinct. I don't know if they would necessarily comprehend that it was a ghost, but they would know something was there.
Then again, they may understand what it is. There's a very distinct feeling that comes with a ghost, almost unmistakeable. I don't see why not.

I am 100% convinced that cats do sense spirits. I have seen them in action, and I had very supernatural things going on at a place I once lived. My cat seemed to be alerted to it before something happened.

They can. At least, mine can. I had 2 cats that died within 4 months of each other and I got 2 new kittens because I missed having cats so much. After the original cats died, we would occasionally see their apparitions walking around the house. One night I was in my bed with my 2 kittens and they were sleeping. I saw one of the cat apparitions walk into the bedroom and immediately my 2 kittens woke up and stared at it and followed it's movements as it walked across the room and disappeared. Then they settled back down and went back to sleep.

No, I don't believe that they can sense ghosts. But I do believe that they can sense much more than we can. A trait not just exclusive to the feline species.

Perhaps they are only relying on their instincts which give them information on how to react. Cats can sense human emotion, cancers, seizures, natural disaster, and so forth.

No, not nuts, very real. Cats and even dogs just have that extra sensory abilities to be able to tune into energies like that. They can sense things most human cannot.

Yes they can, not only "sense" it, but see it as well, if yu have the opportunity to watch a cat when it "senses" something strange just observe how it behaves and how it's eyes get. That should convince yu :)
