When it comes to era, I find the Great Depression fascinating, riveting, and inspirational. Obviously, this effected the entire world: economically, politically, and socially. The stories of triumph over tragedy and ingenuity in the most ingenious circumstances prove overcoming the odds is well within reach depending on how much perseverance a person utilizes.
When it comes to type of history, I prefer firsthand accounts from journals: stories that capture that thought,, feeling, mood, dreams, and ordinary intermingled with the extraordinary. Who better to relate than one who was there after all?

That's not a dumb question. Matter of fact, it is a very good question. It is impossible for a true Historian to know all there is to know about history. There is to much of it. So, they specialize in one or two specific areas of interest. For instance, my specialty is American History, focusing primarily on World War II.
I have many books on the subject and even spent time in Europe visiting specific areas of interest involving the war.

I generally follow a lot of military/political histories. Particularly with the Ancient Romans, the American Civil War, and the twentieth century.
I find it interesting as they can show us what has truly shaped our society today. The Romans and Greeks laid the foundation. The Civil War affirmed what America woud be, and the twentieth century obviously includes some of the greatest conflicts that have ever been fought and teaches us the greatest lessons of what must be done and where we are going.

I've read a lot of history. At present I'm reading about Japan from a book which was written in 1937, before WW2. I'm also reading about Latin America from a book written in 1950, after which I will read one from around 2000 to see the different perspectives that 50 years makes.

Kind of changes a lot.
Currently? Women's History am working to learn a tour focusing on the women who helped shaped San Francisco.
I am also interested in the
American Civil War,
WW2 on the home fronts
and
historical true crime. Did Lizzy really take an ax...who was jack the ripper...how did Jim Jones get 900 people to kill themselves for him?

Wow that's a bit hard to decide.
I would have to say the Renaissance as that was the time that free-thinking existed, numerous scientific progresses were made. And not to mention that it was the time great artworks were created such as Botticelli's Primavera, Da Vinci's Last Supper, Michaelangelo's Creation of Adam etc etc.
Also I loved the idea of it being the rebirth after the chaos and confusion of war and plague.

I go on stints, four or five years I'll read nothing but Russian, or mongol, or crusades, and then about 15 years I read only American Indian, because I'm 1/8 th. but I read all types if I can. right now history of oil companies. History is a tool that gives you a sense of direction, if this where we came from it's good chance we may be going somewhere. Everything evolves from something into something else.

I have a fascination with the Holocaust and the Jewish Europeans in WWII. I think it started with reading The Diary of Anne Frank and Number the Stars.
Now, in particular, the stories of the Jewish uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto, the stories of Oskar Schindler and the "Schindler Jews", and the stories of the escape of the Jewish citizens of Denmark are fascinating to me. There are so many individual stories, all of which are heartbreaking and inspiring.
My personal reccommendations:
Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl
Anne Frank: A Biography (great for a general history, too)
Anne Frank Remembered
Number the Stars (so cool that there is a children's book out there about this topic)
Schindler's Ark / Schindler's List (the book)
Schindler's List (the movie)
Uprising
Pretty much any autobiography of survivors
In addition, I really like the stories of the Resistance. Any story of Holocaust survivors has stories of Resistance fighters, because they played such an important role in the survival of any would-be victim
Stories of real-life heroes, instead of the James Bonds or Indiana Joneses are much more moving and inspiring.
Studying all this has led me to the belief that when mankind allows themselves to forget what has happened, it will happen again.
The events leading up to the Holocaust and WWII were not out of the ordinary. The combination of a depression and a quick-talking, engaging, forceful leader began things. If Hilter were around today, starting his political life, I think it's quite likely he could have a pretty strong following. People tend to overlook the fact that he was, in fact, initially voted into power.
(My fascination prevents me from shutting up quickly... sorry 'bout the extra long post. I'm kind of passionate about it, and what I think it means for the future.)
