I am not sure if people would consider him the greatest, but he definitely the most influential and that would be Pope Gregory XIII. He is the one who authorized the calendar we use today, the Gregorian Calendar.

The most advancment? Alot of people like Gregory the Great for that reason. He FINALLY sent someone to Britain to convert the pagan saxon island to christianity (Britain had been christian under the roman empire but in the late 400s the saxons invaded, took over and christianity almost died out). As a result of this, the soon to be most powerful nation in the world was able to spread christianity all over the globe through trade as well as imperial expansion over the last 1500yrs. I'm not sure how much other expansion he is responsible for but he would be worth looking into.

I think the answer would be somewhat subjective. Plus, the changes in our world make it difficult to compare a modern Pope with one from several centuries back. That said, my personal opinion, Pope John Paul II. If nothing else, he was Pope for a longer time than almost any. Also, I think he has done more to help humanity and to work for world peace than any Pope I am know.

I am going to say Pope Innocent III. He lead the 4th Crusade against the Moslems (that's how they spelt it back then...LOL). He made sure the soldiers were well funded and equiped and we was persistant on fighting them Moslems. Innocent III was also a big supporter to St Francis (one of my favorite Catholics in History). By the way I am a Baptist. Imagine that. I just like to read History.
