Listen, be as attentive as possible, give input without judgement and be blunt and honest without being mean. That's what I do and people tell me that I'm easy to talk to. Smiles make you more approachable. It's really something that comes naturally to those who are capable of it, but not impossible to ones who aren't.

You encourage the other person to talk. You act interested in what they are saying, get them to talk about things that interest them, you don't dominate the conversation, you don't condemn anything they say...if you have a different opinion you put it out nicely, politely, considerately, or just move on. You can start with anything, like movies...have you seen...etc, or music, have you heard...etc.

The short answer is: just don't let anything bother you and allways say nice things. The long answer is a mass of reading, start with Solomon's Proverbs.

One must simply listen and make noises of comfort, if the speaker is distressed. And I find agreeing helps.
