Any one can be president. But, a campaign takes a lot of money. Helps is if you bring some to the table yourself. Besides wealthy people rub elbows with wealthy people who will give them more money to get their point of view into office.
Americans don't have much choice in choosing the president. Look at the popular vote and the electoral college.

A poor man can run for President because wealth is not a requirement to become a President as provided for in the Constitution. Fundraisers and supporters could make an indigent become a President.
VOTE for your choice as US President on my 360 degrees blog and know if a poor man can win.

If you go by what the Constitution says, anyone naturally born here and of a certain age could run for President. However, that is not the way it is. You have to already be rich in the world of today and make a pretty high amount of money in your campaign to go all around and make yourself famous and woo the crowds and do alot of commercial advertisements. So, in the world of today, it is very limited to the richest individuals of the country who really know how to smooth talk the voters.

In order to be president you definitely need money. Whether raised or of their own pocket. Having access to substantial amounts doesn't' exactly hurt. Some people are scared to see Bloomberg run because he has so much money. I would assume under the Constitution the founding fathers always thought rich men would run the country and they do. So being you or me, our chances of us picking some platforms and running is impossible. Two. We don't have as much say in who will run on what you believe is your best side. Certain States make the difference, not all. And certain primary states even elect the candidate who runs. So our choices are very limited. You may like Dodd, I may like Biden, but neither will be running come next October. It sucks in a way, but it is the best form of government we know of.

It's not a 'must' in the real sense of the word. But presidential campaigns are sooooo expensive that only the really wealthy can afford them. It doesn't sound fair, and it isn't, but that's the way it is and will continue to be.
Actually, we do not have many choices. Vote for the least of evils.. that's all we can do.

We will no longer have a "poor" president....those days are over forever.
It takes a lot of your own money to be president....and to me that's sad and dangerous.

Well,
it takes $ 300,000,000 or more to win the presidency
I guess you don't have to be rich. You could be a poor person who happens to have $ 300,000,000
