You know.... I don't think any of the modern authors have ever improved on the original "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley or "Dracula" by Bram Stoker.
Have you considered the original classics?

Here are a couple of really cool suspense book. These have a little blood and guts, ALOT of creepy. Kind close to "Wow, could this be happening somewhere?"
The Watchers - Dean Koontz
Frankenstein series - Dean Koontz
Insomnia -Stephen King
And, pure weird and spooky:
Prey - Grahamn Masterson
Also, Anne Rule writes about really famous serial killers and stuff. These books are way detailed and gory if that's what you are looking for
