Kept alone they really are. Even in a small group of 6 or so they are far from aggressive. I kept and bred them and routinely cleaned the tank in the normal fashion and they were never inclined to approach my hands or arms.

I've caught them out of the Amazon,I've eaten them in Brazil.Every time we go we take a photo of a man standing chest deep in water, fishing for Piranha. They are scavengers with really sharp teeth, nothing more. If you think your Piranha is tough put him in a tank with a Dovii(Wolf Cichlid) and come back in an hour. Piranha eat fins when they are hungry, Dovii kill anything that can't get away. Would you dare test? Well would ya?

It depends, do you mean red bellies? if so yes, I would be worried about ternetzi, caribe, and piraya piranhas from the pygo genus, in a group. But alone, id be scared to put my hand into a tank with a few spilo's(serrsalmus species) or a manuelli, or even a big rhom, a serrasalmus rhombeus over 12" would be very scary to clean the tank of. so if your question ment piranhas in general then yes, most people swim with the red bellied piranhas, not the others. the others come from different runoff rivers of the amazon.
