I don't understand why smoking is considered taboo, yet drinking alcohol is widely accepted. You can argue that 2nd hand smoke affects others, but drinking also affects many other people and destroys lives (probably many more than smoking). In my opinion if we are to ban one, we should ban them both. What do you think?

First off, I don't smoke never have and never will. This is an observation, the US is getting stripped of more and more rights. Yet nobody does anything about it. How many people do you know that have died from lung cancer compared to those you know or even hear of that die from alcoholism and drunk drivers? Smoking does not impare the users judgement as drinking does either. They both rank on the same scale, like it or not.

No disrespect intended, but I think you are proposing some pretty slippery logic here. "If we ban thing-A, shouldn't we also ban thing-B". Each such decision should stand on it's own merits.

By the way, you write as if you think smoking is illegal. It isn't illegal or banned or taboo. But it is restricted. The same is true from the consumption of alcohol. It is restricted, but the restrictions on drinking are different from the restrictions associated with smoking. This is entirely appropriate.

Again, no disrespect intended. Thanks for reading this far.

For one thing, no... while you are right to a point, alcohol if used in moderation actually has health benefits! Studies have shown that having one to two alcoholic beverages a day are good for your heart, and some think that it may prevent lung cancer.
Alcohol has been banned in the US before, it ends up being like any other illegal drug, it's still there but the government can't regulate it anymore. Read up on prohibition.

no way! is this a fact or are you kidding? Intoxicants were forbidden in the Qur'an through several separate verses revealed at different times over a period of years. At first, it was forbidden for Muslims to attend to prayers while intoxicated (4:43). Then a later verse was revealed which said that alcohol contains some good and some evil, but the evil is greater than the good (2:219). This was the next step in turning people away from consumption of it. Finally, "intoxicants and games of chance" were called "abominations of Satan's handiwork," intended to turn people away from God and forget about prayer, and Muslims were ordered to abstain (5:90-91).

There is no argument about 'passive drinking;' fatuous though the passive smoking argument is at least it makes some sense to the hyper-sensitive who have little regard for others freedom and liberty. Moderate drinking is actually good for you, the fanatical US Puritan pilgrim fore-fathers have been proved wrong in this regard, they believed that all pleasure was the work of the devil and bad for you (and the people who are around you), this is clearly not the case and science has now demonstrated quite the opposite.

No I definately don't think drinking should be banned at all as you are drinking sensibly alcohol is part of our culture so why should it be banned? I knew that once they got smoking banned in pubs and clubs they would start on alcohol just one more thing of civil liberties being taken away from us.

It's impossible to smoke without polluting your immediate vicinity with not only your foul odor, but harmful chemicals as well. It's quite easy to take a drink without disturbing anyone else in the least.

No, drinking alcohol should not be banned. Nor should smoking for that matter, but no one should ever be forced to put up with another's smoldering coffin nails.

You can smell cigarette smoke. Not very pleasant and bad for health.
You can smell alcohol also but usually just on someone's breath. It doesn't choke you. And true, alcohol is bad for your health if you drink too much.
Truth is though, my great aunt drank beer all her life and lived to be 99 years old. Died a natural death. She drank about 5 or 6 cans a day and was never sick a day in her life. She never smoked though.

Why i think we tried that in the 20's it made us criminals of the first order. Drink in the extreme is just as harmful. I personally dont think i should be telling any free person who is of legal age what they should and shouldn't do with their lives. We seem to want to be in peoples bedrooms, under their clothes and in their bodies . In their cars, in their homes to much for a free society. Look at seat belts, If you don't want one why should you have to were one. Get out of other peoples lives. Its the insurance co. who are the ones who reaps the benefits. It saves them money for people to wear seat belts, not smoke, not drink and for them to govern how we live.
