No, I'm not willing to go without A/C this summer because it's 106 degrees F today. I am willing to turn my thermostat up, and I've had it at 81 or 82 degrees F. I suggest that everyone do the same. It's not a matter of returning to the stone ages, it's a matter of reducing our greenhouse gas emissions sufficiently.

Global cooling in the 70s was due to increased volcanic activity and human aerosol emissions putting particulates into the atmosphere which blocked sunlight, causing global dimming and thus global cooling. In the short-term this overwhelmed global warming:

"If you are so concerned about terrorism, why don't you pick up a gun and go to Iraq?" It's the same kind of question you're asking me, and neither question is fair.

Let's face it, we all have lives, and what we need to do is find solutions that compromise our lives as little as possible. Those of us who are concerned about global warming do our best to do *what we feel comfortable doing* to minimize our contribution to it. And we encourage others to do the same. The truth is that real societal change - the sort of thing you're suggesting regarding "giving up AC all summer" - has to come from good leadership. (Remember World War II and how everyone was encouraged to give aluminum and buy bonds? That wasn't a grass-roots phenomenon.) And according to Gore and to the climate scientists who have recently released reports, such a dramatic shift is not yet required.

So in terms of "why complain," if you don't have a better idea, why complain about Democrats? :-)

As for what has changed, I'm sure the science has advanced, but I'm not going to take a blind stab at that one. But what it looks like to me from minimal research is that people were concerned that the climate was changing, and whether that was a warming or cooling trend was not yet obvious in the 70s. But I was just a twinkle in my dad's eye at that point, so take it with a grain of salt, ok?

I converted my house to passive cooling and passive solar heating. A lot of my friends did the same. The result is lower bills, less of an environmental footprint, and less production of greenhouse gasses.

The really fun thing is that it is just as cool here. I am just as comfortable in my passive solar house at 100 degrees as I used to be in my air conditioned house. And I have Congestive Heart Failure, so keeping cool really matters.

And it has nothing to do with being "liberal" or being "a Democrat," though some of us are. When you try to make that connection, or accuse some group of people of "whining," you only show how stupid you are.

Solar heating and cooling is not a political statement. It's just a natural effect of being smarter.

One means of conserving energy, according to Yahoo, is to turn the temperature up two degrees. The air conditioner will not turn off completely, but will run less. If you're hot, then maybe try wearing lighter clothes or shorts instead of jeans. Being 'green' is not a political thing anymore, it's a human thing.

well lets see, what can we all do?
1. use birth control
2.limit air travel
3.limit ac, which I do and we use fans and open windows as often as we can, yes even when it has been in the 90's
4.Ban aerosols
5.Make it a law to recycle plastics, paper, and aluminum, and give us the resources to do it
6.use bio-degradable bags for shopping
7.use bio-degradable "diaper" materials, come on its the 21st century
These are some ideas and yes I know theres many more. I do what I can, and oops, yep I'm one of them liberal democrats!

When I see a lot of nuclear power, I will believe someone is serious. Until then, it is pure politics.
