I'd guess about 500,000 pennies, give or take.

This is based on the volume of a penny (0.36 cubic cm), the volume of the drum (55 gal = 208,200 cubic cm), and about a 90% packing efficiency (just a guess).

Try a small scale test and see how many it takes to fill a cup (an 8oz. container). Since a gallon holds just over 16 cups of liquid, multiply that number by 16. Smaller samples, like using 1/4 cup instead will give you a greater error. Good luck!
