Will this work:
I connect my modem to my router then conect my router to my computer by a ethernet connection (will a cross over cable work or does it have to be ethernet) then my laptop has got a wireless adapter built in, will this work of course I will have to do the setting and configuration. But will the network work??

1) Yep that's a Wireless LAN.
2) Yep that will work.
3) Not a cross over cable. A standard Ethernet cable (Cat5).

You could even go a step further and get a wireless USB adapter for your computer and use that instead of any Ethernet cabling.

Yes.it work but connect from Router to computer not cross over cable it's straight through cable.
if you wish to connect your router to your laptop using wireless it would not work you must install new access point for your laptop wireless. Access point can with your router wireless.

Everything you asked is yes, perfectly OK, except the cross over cable part, unless your router specifically says "auto-sensing" the wires you always need a regular cable; auto-sensing wire is designed to cross back a crossed over cabling so no "auto-sensing" means no cross-over.

Always use Straight through (NOT crossover).

And yes, it will work.
