How about ALL of our troops? I mean, what more can you ask for than thousands of young men and women willing to give up their lives for us? And they don't even know us.

Well if these are my only choices I'm going with Neil Armstrong, Muhammad Ali, Oprah Winfrey and Katherine Hepburn in that order.
Donald Trump is more icon than Ted Turner and so is Rupert Murdock. Bill Gates is not on the list or he would be my choice. Tiger Woods is more icon than Lance Armstrong and truthfully I would pick John Glenn over Neil Armstrong.

Neil Armstrong, Oprah Winfrey, Kermit, Mohammed Ali, Yogi Berra, Katherine Hepburn.
As much as I love Lance Armstrong, I just don't think the American people see him as an icon. Not yet, anyway.
I don't think, personally that anyone necissarily DESERVES to be called an icon. You either are one or you arent one. Some other icons that I can think of that perhaps aren't as popular are OJ Simpson, Bonnie and Clyde, Al Capone, etc. Being famous does not necessarily make you iconic. Being iconic does not mean you are a good person.
My opinion.

Neil Armstrong reminds me of "American", but I'd have to go with Superman. Definately NOT Oprah. Unless being racist toward white people is American.

Technically yes, If you are a citizen of the united states you are an american. Think about it from the opposite point of view. If a white guy with a british accent moves to mexico and becomes a citizen is he a "Mexican"? Technically yes but come on. People would laugh at him if when asked what nationality are you and he says mexican and is completely white and british sounding.

Neil Armstrong from your list. How about Martin L King, Dwight D Eisenhower, Benjamin Franklin, Elvis, John Wayne... the people on your list are way down on my list!
